Preparing for a vasectomy

  • Avoid Certain Medications: You will be advised to stop taking certain medications before the procedure. Medications such as aspirin, fish oils, and non steroidal anti-inflammatories (such as ibuprofen) should be stopped for a period before and after the procedure. Please discuss your medications with Dr Goddard for specific advice regarding this.
  • Do not stop any medications without talking to your doctor.
  • Hair removal: You will be asked to remove hair on the scrotum and base of penis prior to the procedure to reduce the risk of infection. This should be done no more than 24h before the procedure, and ideally on the morning of the procedure. Suitable hair clippers are preferred to shaving, to reduce the risk of small cuts in the skin.
  • Clothing and Comfort: Wear loose-fitting clothing to ensure comfort after the procedure. Wear supportive underwear (either jocks, or 2 pairs of boxer shorts) to help support the scrotum and reduce discomfort after  surgery.
